Impartial advice opened doors for business

ARCHITECTURAL metalworkers Stewart Fraser Ltd found that taking independent advice led directly to improved business.

The Ashford-based company, which designs, manufactures and installs entranceways, is family run, with a 75-strong workforce.

Recently the company was contracted to design, manufacture and install new oak doors with bronze sheet and purpose-made sections, for the West entrance of St Paul's Cathedral.

The work involves drawing bronze coil on to wood and Stewart Fraser is one of only three companies in the UK able to undertake such an intricate project.

The nature of the work proved problematic to the company and they turned to Business Link Kent, the impartial advice agency, for help.

Chris Brimson, managing director, said: "Training people to the skills we need has been difficult. When we heard about Business Link Kent we thought they might be the ones to help us. And they have."

Chairman Andrew Fraser, is the third generation of his family to run the company.

He said: "We wanted to progress the business and felt it best to get impartial advice. We contacted Business Link Kent and took on a business adviser, who helped highlight where we could perform better and make improvements."

He was able to introduce them to a variety of Business Link Kent products and services. They developed a full health and safety policy and mentoring projects, had a financial “health check”, and improved the skills of management through training and seminars.

Mr Brimson added: "Our relationship with Business Link Kent has improved how we run our business and delivered tangible results, showing deficiencies and helping us address them.

"Developing new products such as fire doors, and filling niche markets - we already provide stainless steel polished trim for Bentley cars and a variety of luxury power boats - are top of our continuing discussions with Peter."
