Food production tops the agenda at the first in a series of meetings designed to encourage businesses to shape the Kent economy.

The events are hosted by Kent Economic Board and will target sectors that have the greatest potential to boost prosperity.

They will focus on four key areas: food production, horticulture and agriculture; construction and civil development; low carbon and energy production; and digital and creative media.

The first growth consultation - for businesses in food production, horticulture and agriculture - will take place at East Malling Research Conference Centre between 3pm and 6pm on January 19.

Organisations taking part include Kent County Council, the National Farmers Union, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) and Hadlow College.

KCC leader Paul Carter will be joined by speakers covering company investment and development, business success and entrepreneurial challenge - Professor Allan Buckwell, CLA policy director, Nick Holmes, specialist accountant and tax adviser in agriculture, horticulture and estates at Faversham-based Chavereys; and Oliver Doubleday, managing director of GH Dean, Sittingbourne.

The event will be chaired by KEB business champion Jon Regan, of Hugh Lowe Farms, Mereworth.

He said: “The most important thing about this event is that we want to hear from businesses themselves about what will drive investment, tackle skills in the industry and shape business development to secure a prosperous future.â€

“The need to invest in food production and associated technologies is like never before a vital national interest.â€

Further meetings will be held on Marchf 29 and Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone (construction), April 27 (low carbon and energy productin) - venue to be confirmed - and digital and creative media - venue and date to be confirmed.
