BUSINESS and community projects across much of rural Swale could stand to gain from a successful Partnership bid for European funds.

The Mid Kent Leader+ programme was launched last week at the County showground to herald the start of this new funding opportunity for rural communities.

Swale Borough Council has been working with a range of organisations, including KCC and local councils in Ashford, Maidstone and Shepway to successfully bid for 1.8 million funding.

Communities and businesses in eligible areas must now bring forward innovative projects, which will help the rural economy and the quality of life for residents. Grants can be awarded for up to 50 per cent of costs for approved projects.

Examples of projects that have already come forward from across the Mid Kent Leader+ area include the wired up village to encourage computer use and improve training recycling and community composting schemes, local food initiatives and a grey angels scheme to use older volunteers' talents.

Cllr Andrew Bowles, leader of Swale Borough Council and executive member for rural affairs, welcomes the commencement of the programme.

He said: "Swale Borough Council and other partners are delighted to have won this new funding. Unlike other parts of the County Swale has never benefited from Rural Development Area Status despite the fact that many of our rural communities are isolated and experience real problems.

"Through this programme projects have a real opportunity to access funding and I urge everyone with ideas large or small to come forward."
