Chain stores show interest in high street

A BUDGET general store chain is in the early stages of opening a branch in run-down Gillingham High Street.

Wilkinson was named as one of three stores due to open in the former Co-op building, which closed in February last year.

However, the company will not confirm or deny if its future lies within the town centre.

The Co-op store is expected to be divided into one large and two smaller units.

Ladies’ fashion outlet Bon Marche has confirmed it will be moving in and opening its doors on Thursday, June 14, creating an extra 10 jobs in the town.

Sportswear giant JJB Sports is also rumoured to be moving into the building but they too would neither confirm nor deny it.

The news has been welcomed by Medway Council’s portfolio holder for economic growth and strategic development, Cllr Jane Chitty.

She said: “There has been work going on behind the scenes for this building for a long time.

“This news is exciting and extremely good. We have to rejoice in the fact that this has happened.

“I hope it gives people a bit of a lift. It’s a good indication of the businesses that could come to Gillingham if we keep the pressure on.

“This is just the beginning. There is interest in Gillingham and we have to be positive about the growth of the town.”
