The British Library's collection of historical newspapers is one of the wonders of the world: it contains newspapers from 1603 to the present day.

There are bound volumes of newspapers covering 20 miles of shelving and more than 300,000 reels of microfilm. Until recently, the only way to see these newspapers was to visit the British Library but now many of them are available online.

The British Newspaper Archive is a partnership with the British Library to digitise this huge collection and make it available on the internet.

There are hundreds of millions of incredible stories just waiting to be found

Launched in 2011 and renewed in 2021, tens of thousands of pages of newspapers have already been scanned into the archive. Users can now search millions of stories by keyword, name, location, date or title and watch their results appear in an instant.

Usually it costs £80 to use the archive, but as part of the Black Friday weekend, the price has dropped by 30% to under £56.

The online archive is a brilliant research tool for anybody interested in the past. You can discover the way historical events were originally reported, unearth forgotten stories and even uncover amazing details about your own family history.

The 30% offer is only available until midnight on Monday, November 29, so you will need to be quick.

A subscription would make the perfect Christmas gift, or use it yourself and start exploring more than 400 years of history.
