70 jobs lost as 9/11 hits aircraft company

THE aviation industry’s decline since 9/11 has contributed to the loss of more than 70 jobs.

Modern Jet Support, which was based at Manston Airport, was formed 18 years ago as subsidiary of DAS Air Cargo to maintain the airline’s freight aircraft.

It expanded rapidly and began securing contracts with other firms but the worldwide aviation crisis, along with the move of MK Airlines, has forced the company to fold.

MK, a freight airline which ships fruit, vegetables and flowers from around the world to England, recently moved its operation from Manston to Ostend in Belgium blaming a hike in charges from the airport for the move.

Just a few months ago MJS was featured in a local business publication and the difficulties in securing customers was mentioned.

A spokesperson said restrictions imposed on companies such as MJS, although set for a good reason, make it difficult to find new customers.

MJS was recognised as a well run and respected company, a fact that was rewarded by it being given the Investors In People standard five months ago.

It is thought a small number of jobs may be found for staff at companies run by DAS Air Cargo.
