Hythe boss Tim Dixon must wait to look at trialist Rene Rivera.

He was hoping to play Rivera in a rearranged friendly at Kennington on Wednesday but the young forward has gone on holiday.

Dixon said: “He’s going to miss a couple of games. It won’t do his chances any harm because I know what a good player he is but he’ll still have to prove himself when he’s back.

“He wanted to come down here, so I would hope we have first refusal. I just need to see him in a couple of friendlies to make sure he fits in with the way we want to do things.”

Shaun Welford scored twice, with James Morrish, Bradley Jordan and Jordan Wells also on target as Hythe won 5-0 at Canterbury in their opening pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Dixon said: “Shaun’s still passionate about playing. People have written him off for the last few years but they do that at their peril.

“There’s still a lot to his game. He’s getting on but with experience comes knowledge.

“We can’t get away with knocking balls over the top for him – we’ve got to use him wisely and support him in the right way."
