Police were called to the home shortly after 9pm on Sunday following the attempted robbery, which happened in the Mortimer Street area at about 2.15pm.

A spokesman for the force said: "Officers attended and arrested a man who was wanted in relation to an offence in the town earlier the same day.

"Toby Shilling, of Herne Bay, has since been charged with attempted robbery.

"The 32-year-old appeared before Folkestone Magistrates' Court today and was remanded in custody to appear before Canterbury Crown Court on February 6."

It is understood some firearms officers attended to assist as they were in the area at the time, but it was not an armed response.
