Fleet to put faith in striking starlet

SET TO START: Onome Sodje
SET TO START: Onome Sodje

Gravesend & Northfleet v York City

MANAGER Liam Daish is looking to the power and pace of Onome Sodje to provide an element of surprise as Gravesend continue their journey onwards and upwards in the Nationwide Conference.

The 17-year-old striker, signed on a year-long loan from Charlton, came off the bench to equalise and earn a point from the weekend 1-1 draw at Accrington.

Now he could start Saturday’s home game against second-placed York City as the Fleet look to move in on the early pacesetters.

Sodje, a key member of the Addicks under-18 side last season, underlined his potential with five goals in 16 starts while scoring once in five games on loan at Welling last season.

His progress since arriving at Stonebridge Road has been checked by suspension, keeping him away from the prying eyes of opposition scouts.

Daish, a defender in his playing days, confessed: "I would have hated playing against some like Onome because he is all hustle, bustle and aggression.

"Because he hasn’t played a great deal for us, opposing teams will have little or no prior knowledge about what he can do.

"That might have been the case at Accrington and it could be in future games."

Supporters are reminded that Saturday’s match kicks off at noon to avoid clashing with England’s World Cup qualifier against Austria.
