EBBSFLEET UNITED groundsman Peter Norton has been honoured by the Football Association.

Norton, from Greenhithe, finished third in the FA's Groundsman of the Year Awards in the Step 1 and 2 category for clubs outside the Premiership and Football League.

The 72-year-old was pipped to the top honour by Hyde United's James Skachill and Forest Green Rovers Matthew Rainey, but was recognised at an FA presentation lunch at Windsor Racecourse.

Fleet chairman Jason Botley said: "This is tremendous recognition for Peter and the club. Years ago we had problems with the pitch at Stonebridge Road but Peter's hard work has really paid off and he thoroughly deserves this recognition.

"He is always at the ground giving the pitch tender loving care and seems to be here from before dawn until after dark every day of the year."
