EBBSFLEET United won their first-ever game on Tuesday night after defeating neighbours Welling in a pre-season friendly.

The Fleet, who had been known as Gravesend & Northfleet until their name change in the close season, were playing their first match under their new name.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 13th minute and the honour of scoring Ebbsfleet's first goal fell to a Welling defender, as trialist Tony Sinclair put through his own net after George Purcell's left-wing cross.

Fleet boss Liam Daish said: "It was a good workout and our fitness levels were decent.

"It's only the first game but we did well. Welling have got a bit of experience about them and that was their third game already in pre-season."

Ebbsfleet fans got their first chance to see summer signings Raphael Nade and Neil Barrett but it was left-winger Purcell who caught the eye.

Both teams made numerous substitutions during the second half, which was more notable for some tasty challenges rather than goalmouth incident.

Welling player-manager Neil Smith confirmed the signings of striker Lloyd Blackman and midfielder Michael Johnson after the game and stated that Millwall forward Ross Gaynor will feature again in Thursday's friendly at Maldon.

Fleet boss Daish revealed that he could bring in two trialists for their next pre-season match, at Bromley, on Saturday.
