Championship club eye Fleet striker Akinde

Ebbsfleet striker John Akinde looks set to leave Stonebridge Road

Ebbsfleet striker John Akinde could end up playing in the Championship, according to one of the clubs chasing his signature.

The Fleet have asked the 30,000 MyFootballClub members to decide whether to accept a bid in excess of £140,000 for Akinde.

But his destination may not be Peterborough as the rumour mill has suggested. Reports there suggest that the 19-year-old has been talking to Bristol City with an eye to a move to Ashton Gate.

Peterborough had made their interest in Akinde clear during the summer with a series of offers before having a £100,000 bid rejected by Fleet manager Liam Daish.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson told The Evening Telegraph: "I spoke to John and his father last night (Wednesday) to try and persuade them to sign for us so we will have to wait and see what happens.

"I'd be disappointed to lose out on John as we've been after him for a very long time. He would be a certainty to score goals at our level, but it was inevitable that other clubs would be interested in him."

Despite the speculation, Bristol City manager Gary Johnson said earlier this week that he is unlikely to dip into the transfer market before Monday's deadline.

After his side's humiliating exit from the Carling Cup on Tuesday night at the hands of Crewe Alexandra, Johnson admitted to losing faith in his side but has now said he is happy with his squad - unless the right player comes along.

The 30,000 MyFootballClub members have until Friday to register their vote on Akinde's future.
