Travellers set up camp on Gravesend Grammar School playing field in Church Lane

Travellers parked their caravans on the grounds of Gravesend Grammar School, the latest incursion in north Kent.

Five caravans entered the school playing fields, off Church Lane, Gravesend, last night before leaving just before 10am this morning.

The convoy of vehicles consists of cars and mobile homes and was spotted by pupils when they arrived for lessons.

The travellers were spoken to by both school staff and police before they left the area.

Head teacher Geoffrey Wybar said: "We took all necessary steps to make sure there was no threat to anyone's safety."

The camp comes a week after magistrates ordered the eviction of travellers near the Cyclopark.

Kent County Councillor Bryan Sweetland said he wants the group to be charged after a large amount of rubbish was left at the site.

Other recent incursions include camps at Darenth Country Park in Dartford and Swanley Park in Swanley.
