TAXI drivers are to get CCTV cameras in their cabs after winning European funding.

Gravesend taxi driver Gian Chand Bajar died after being hit by his own car in May this year – sparking calls for CCTV cameras in all Gravesham cabs.

On Tuesday, Gravesham Borough Council announced it will match the £59,000 from Urban Thames Gateway Kent.

Taxi drivers have been invited to an open day at Brands Hatch next week when a range of security equipment will be displayed.

Rick Davis, a spokesman for the United Taxi Group in Gravesend, said: “This is fantastic news. We are full of praise for the council and the police who have worked hard to get the funding together for the CCTV."

Luke Aujila, 20, of no fixed abode, has appeared at Maidstone Crown Court charged with the murder of Mr Bajar, of Darnley Road, Gravesend.
