MORE than 30 windows were smashed at a Kent school when vandals launched a night-time assault on the building.

The damage at St John’s RC comprehensive at Gravesend is expected to cost around £1,000 to repair.

A spokesperson for North Kent Police said the damage, discovered by cleaning staff, had been caused by people throwing rocks and other items such as bins.

The damage to first floor windows meant some areas of the school, which has around 1,100 pupils, were unsafe and out of bounds. However, lessons were moved into other class rooms and some classes merged while repairs were carried out.

Head teacher John Stanley said: “The children and the staff all worked together to ensure we continued providing a quality education."

He added: “There is nothing that links it to the school. When children misbehave in general around Gravesham it is easy for people to blame the school but children are actually in school for a short amount of their time. This is about parents being out of control of their children.”
