People are being urged to vote on the best name for a new square in the town centre.

The space in front of Gravesham’s civic centre and Woodville Halls theatre, which has already hosted a children’s party to mark the wedding of Prince William and Kate, is set to be the stage for many more big events.

During the Big Seven festival a range of entertainment will be performed at the square in Windmill Street, Gravesend.

There will also be an official opening and naming ceremony on Tuesday, July 19.

The four names people can choose from are:

• Civic square
• Community square
• Woodville square
• Woodville terrace

The council is asking for online votes to help make the decision by the end of June.

Council leader Cllr John Burden said: "Personally, I think the name Community Square is very fitting since it reflects the council’s overall ambition to draw together the community and put it at the heart of decision-making.

"But it is important that people take part in the naming of a public space which will undoubtedly become the hub of so much community activity in the future."

The square is the first phase of a £75 million scheme which will also see a new bus station and car park built near the station, between Darnley Road and Garrick Street, and Network Rail extending Gravesend station by building a third platform to ease congestion.
