People have been enjoying the sunshine as it returned after weeks of rain.

Workers leapt at the chance to sit in St Andrew's Gardens in West Street and to wander down the prom.

The Met was reporting temperatures of 21C in Gravesend this lunchtime but Gravesham council has vowed not to switch the fountains in the community square back on.

They were a feature of the revamped space but the arrival of drought restrictions led council bosses to turn the taps off to the annoyance of children who relished the chance to dodge the jets.

There are now questions about whether they will ever be switched on again.

First there were risks from the cold from the cold last winter.

Then before any warm weather arrived the water companies brought in a drought order.

It is expected to last until 2013 despite the heavy rain of the past few weeks.

The fountain is designed to react to the wind. As the wind speed increases it should drop the pressure, and the water height.

Council bosses are worried the lack fo use could invalidate the council's maintenance contract. It requires the fountain to be used regularly.
