Olympic success

A report by bosses at Gravesham council has revealed new facts about the borough during the Olympic Games.

The British dressage team stayed at the Premier Inn on Wrotham Road in Gravesend while the American junior wrestling team stayed at the Leather Bottle in Cobham.

The Best Western Manor Hotel on Hever Court Road, Singlewell, also welcomed 45 people from UK Athletics and seven Americans from ESPN TV.

Meanwhile tourism in the borough over the summer months saw 875 people visit the Cold War bunker, 948 people visit the New Tavern Fort and 800 visitors to the Gads Hill Dickens Museum. The Cyclopark had about 40,000 visitors.

People visiting the tourist information centre meant visitor figures of 9,076 were up 31% over July and 44% during August.

Visitors from overseas were up 9% with the top five nationalities during July being French, Dutch, German, Spanish and Belgium.

Sales figures in the town’s shops went up by 15%.
