New nursery The Grove Daycare Nursery to open in former Gravesend nightclub

A former nightclub has undergone a £300,000 revamp and is set to reopen – as a nursery.

The Grove and Ruby Lounge, in Gravesend, has undergone a complete refurbishment to convert the dance floor into a daycare facility for the under-fives.

New owner Amanjeet Kahlon told KentOnline: “I have created a space that one day I would want to send my children.

“I have invested myself in this business. For me, it is not about making money but having that homely space for everybody to come into.”

The 33-year-old first started working in the industry when she was 19 and has worked across nurseries and schools but never felt they were the right fit.

“I said to myself I am not going back to a nursery if it is not my own,” she added.

“If I am to go back to teaching I am going to start my own one, with my own ethos to make a difference in children’s, families’ and staff lives.”

Amanjeet, who will also be managing the nursery in The Grove, said as much as she wants to provide a safe and positive place for children, she also wants the same for her staff and stressed the importance of a good work-life balance.

The Grove Daycare Nursery will also be plastic free meaning the resources used will be eco-friendly.

On its website, it states: “With our perpetually changing world, it is vital that children are taught the importance of sustainability and caring for our surroundings and environment.

“I believe it is important that these ideas are embedded in children’s early education, to ensure they grow and develop an understanding about the changing world in which they live.”

In 2021, planning permission was approved to change the use of the nightclub into a day nursery.

In their report, council officers said: “The loss of the existing nightclub use would not lead to an underprovision of such facilities in the locality and it would remove an existing anti-social use.

“The proposed development would provide new community infrastructure

“It is considered that the proposal would result in a reduction in noise, disturbance and anti-social behaviour in the surrounding area when compared to the existing nightclub use.”

The nightclub was closed down in 2019 after its licence was revoked for breaching conditions, trading after hours and other concerns.

It had 21 days to argue the decision but no appeal was submitted and the building was instead put up on the market with estate agents Sealeys, for a freehold price of £425,000.

The Grove Daycare Nursery is hoping to welcome children later this year.

It will be open from 7am to 7pm on weekdays.
