More than 4,000 people needed to get out the candles after a power cut last night.

People living in the King's Farm and Singlewell areas of Gravesend lost power at about 9.10pm on Sunday.

Some were without power for more than two hours.

A UK Power Networks spokeswoman said the problem was caused by a fault in an underground cable and affected 4,443 customers.

She added: "Engineers began restoring power supplies within minutes and reconnected all except the last 100 properties in stages in just over an hour. Power was rerouted to the final 100 customers between 10.58pm and 11.27pm.

"We appreciate how difficult it is being without electricity and would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused."
