In a crackdown on fly-tipping, a local authority has issued more than £2,500 in fines to people found dumping rubbish.

Gravesham council's street scene enforcement and environmental crime officers have been investigating a number of incidents across the borough.

As part of this, a 50-year-old man was fined £400 for dumping multiple bin bags of household waste in Havengore Avenue.

Two women, aged 48 and 53, were also slapped with £400 bills after officers investigated fly-tipping offences on the Dickens estate.

A 38-year-old woman was also issued a £400 fine for failing to ensure her waste was disposed of lawfully and allowing an unregistered waste carrier to take items away from her home.

A 60-year-old man has also had to pay up after an incident in Parrock Street.

Furniture which was fly-tipped in Brook Road led to a householder in Northfleet being fined £400 and officers also issued a £150 fine for littering parcel packets in Edwin Street.

A council spokesman said: "The council will not tolerate fly-tipping in Gravesham and will continue to fine and prosecute those that think it is acceptable to fly-tip in the borough.

"The environmental enforcement team will continue to investigate and prosecute a number of offenders who have committed large scale offences and they will appear in court in due course.

"Our street scene enforcement officers continue to patrol fly-tipping, littering and dog fouling hotspots across the borough and will take robust action against those who flout the law and act in an anti-social manner."

The team are also investigating a number of offences at the recycling banks in Ordnance Road.

The spokesman added: "Those responsible can expect a knock on the door or a letter through the post in the coming weeks."
