Application for new tea room to be added to the Church Hall at St Mary's Church, Chalk

A new tea room could be opened at a listed building, if planners give the go-ahead for the project.

An application for a single-storey extension has been submitted for existing mixed-use barns at the Church Hall at St Mary's Church, Church Lane, Chalk, near Gravesend.

The proposal not only includes the erection of a single-storey infill extension but also two new external staircases, new windows, roof lights and alterations to the existing arrangement of windows in the building.

A parking area will also be provided with in and out access, and there will also be changes to the internal layout, the re-organisation of an external storage container, boiler enclosure and landscaping works.

The Reverend Nigel Bourne, vicar at St Mary's, said: "The application for the works are on our grounds in a shared space and we are supportive of the plans.

"Although there are extensions planned they are almost minute. It is to renovate the two existing buildings and connect them in an L-shape.

"We already use the space like a tea room for things like fetes but these plans will make it a year-round functioning facility.

"The works will also enhance the lavatory facilities and one of the staircases being built is actually a replacement for one that used to be there before it become unsafe.

"If this application goes ahead it will become a really nice community space when completed."

Anyone wishing to make representations about the application should do so by writing to Wendy Lane, assistant director, Planning Department, Civic Centre, Windmill Street, Gravesend, DA12 1AU by Friday, April 23 quoting the application number 20210178.
