Garages behind Campbell Road, Gravesend, to be demolished to make way for houses

Plans to demolish garages and build a row of houses have been approved.

Developer Brenchley Homes applied for planning permission to construct five homes in Campbell Road, Gravesend.

The site is occupied by 40 rented garages – in which seven were not used – that were described to be in "a poor state of repair" and "substandard for vehicle parking" use.

The decision statement added it had become a hotspot for fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour.

Previously, plans to build seven houses at the site were refused due to being "poorly designed and out of keeping" with the area and having a "poor standard of amenity" for occupants.

The fresh application proposes to demolish all of the garages and construct a terrace of five, affordable three-bedroom houses with landscaping, access, parking, refuse, recycling and cycle storage.

It was originally submitted to Gravesham Borough Council in February 2021 but it has undergone several design and layout changes.

Each house will have two parking spaces and there will be another three for visitors.

The project received 19 objections which mainly addressed the loss of garages and four comments in support.

In their final report, council officers said: "The site is a brownfield site and generally there is no overriding objection in principle to the development of the site per se for housing.

"The development of the site for some five units would offer a modest contribution towards meeting local need and shortages in housing delivery."

A decision to approve the plans was made on November 30.
