Dozens of firefighters tackle blaze at Gravesham Court, Gravesend

Dozens of firefighters tackled a blaze at a block of flats.

Around 30 firefighters in seven fire engines were joined by a height vehicle and a command support unit to tackle the fire in a flat on the seventh floor of a tower block in Gravesham Court, Gravesend.

The flat was heavily smoke-logged, with smoke also affecting the rest of the seventh floor. People evacuated the building before fire crews arrived.

The cause of the fire is not suspicious. The Kent Fire and Rescue investigation team were at the flats last night.

It is believed discarded smoking materials caught on a pouffe and caused the blaze in the rest of the flat.

Smoke was escaping from the flat into the hallway of the flats.

Crews, wearing breathing apparatus, found and contained the fire before putting it out using high-pressure hose reel jets.

Ventilation fans were also used to clear smoke and fumes from the building, after crews were called out just before 5pm yesterday (Wednesday).
