A cyclist who died after a crash with a car in Shorne last night has been named as Leon Edwards.
The 43-year-old, from Chatham, died from his injuries at the scene despite the best efforts of medics.
His brother Vince Edwards confirmed the death of Mr Edwards, a former pupil at The Robert Napier School in Gillingham.
He posted on Facebook: "To all my friends I am very sorry to say my brother Leon Edwards was knocked of his push bike and killed last night. RIP bro."
Friends have been paying tribute to Mr Edwards today, including Chris Boddy, who said: "Was a good bloke. My condolences to you."
Kim Mccann posted "Good bloke, heart of gold! Shocked and gutted x RIP Leon Edwards."
And friend Jo Pethig said: "He was my upstairs neighbour for over four years. Hope they have a pint waiting for you up in heaven xx."
Emergency services were sent to Gravesend Road at about 9.10pm after the crash between a bicycle and silver Citroen Picasso car.
Paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene along with an air ambulance crew.
But Kent Police said Mr Edwards was declared dead at the scene.
The male driver of the Picasso was not injured, but was left badly shaken.
A witness, who asked not to be named, arrived at the scene about a minute after the crash.
He pulled over to see if he could help while travelling with his wife and two daughters.
"I spoke to the driver. The guy was on the floor shaking and I got him in the car to try and keep him warm..." - witness to crash
The man said: "The guy was in the middle of the road and the bike was in a messed up state.
"There was blood everywhere. I put a blanket over him because at the time we thought he was still alive.
"I spoke to the driver. The guy was on the floor shaking and I got him in the car to try and keep him warm.
"He was pretty shaken up. I stayed with him for about 10 or 15 minutes until the police arrived.
"The driver behind him said the bike had just shot out of Forge Lane and clipped the side of the car, the front wing. It was a Citroen Picasso so a pretty solid one.
"It sounded like he'd just come out from nowhere and the driver couldn't stop and the other guy driving behind said that's what he saw too and was going to tell the police when they got there."
The road was closed from the junction with Green Farm Lane to Castle Lane while emergency services were at the scene and for officers to carry out an investigation.
The road was reopened at about 12.30am.
