Gravesend couple forced to forfeit more than £90,000 after drugs raid

A couple whose home was raided during an investigation into class A drug supply have forfeited £90,600 cash.

The money was found hidden throughout Paul and Marie Martin’s house in Northfleet Green near Gravesend on the evening of June 8, 2016, following the arrests of two other men at the address.

While the men were later sent to prison for drug offences, Mr and Mrs Martin claimed the cash was their own and earned by them through legitimate means.

But officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate disagreed and took the matter to court using legislation under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

A forfeiture hearing was held at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday February 5, and although the Martins attended they did not contest the forfeiture order, meaning the money will not be returned to them.

Detective Inspector Annie Clayton said: "While neither Paul nor Marie Martin were charged with any offences in relation to this case, we did not believe their explanation as to why there was such a large amount of cash hidden throughout their house.

"Based on the evidence we obtained, it is our strong belief that the money had been earned through criminal means and was connected to the supply of class A drugs.

"I hope this sends a clear message to everyone that crime does not pay and that thanks to the Proceeds of Crime Act we are able to ensure nobody is allowed to reap the rewards of unlawful activity."
