Throwing polystyrene cup from van costs driver £80

POLICE responded swiftly after a resident in a Kent village spotted a van driver toss a polystyrene cup out of his window.

The van was being driven in The Mead, Hawkinge, near Folkestone, when the incident happened on Tuesday morning.

The outraged local resident immediately telephoned PC Trevor Moody, of the neighbourhood policing team in Hawkinge, to complain.

PC Moody made enquiries to trace the company which owns the van and spoke to a depot manager who said the driver would be subject to disciplinary action "for bringing the company into disrepute".

Later the driver telephoned PC Moody to apologise.

A police spokesman said: "Shepway District Council is also sending the driver a fixed penalty notice for £80 for dropping litter."
