Delays on the M20 near Folkestone due to problems at Eurotunnel

Motorists are being warned to expect severe delays of several hours on the M20 near Folkestone due to problems at the Channel Tunnel.

An investigation into a "technical incident" at Eurotunnel has caused congestion on the coastbound exit of the motorway at J11a for the terminal.

Traffic is also queuing on the left lane on the M20 coastbound, between J11 and J11a.

Motorists are complaining of sitting in long queues.

Eurotunnel has apologised to customers for delays of up to six hours, which it says are caused by a technical fault with the overhead power supply.

Drivers are advised to approach with caution and follow the diversion route in place - heading west bound on the M20, turning at J10 and returning.

UK Eurotunnel passengers are facing a four hour delay to their booked time, but are advised to check in as planned.

For passengers in France, there's a two hour wait.

People have vented their frustration on social media - with some queuing for more than seven hours.

Rob Nathan tweeted: "The communication today has been abysmal. Lots of families travelling with children. Delays of seven hours (and counting) are unacceptable, especially when you can and should provide updates on social media. Eventually saying sorry is pretty pathetic."

Andrea Finlay said: "Communication has been terrible, only seems to being updated via Twitter!

"All boards inside and website not updating with the correct boarding numbers.

"Thank you for the free water though, please sort out the food situation."

Another person tweeted: "I think we would all agree that today has been unusual circumstances but again would comment on poor communication and completely unrealistic timescales.

"Poor staff in the building were fielding loads because they were equally in the dark. Not acceptable."
