Seal pup rescued after getting stuck in Folkestone

An adorable seal pup had to be rescued after getting stuck between rocks at low tide.

The young pup was found after a family's dog picked up its scent on a beach in Folkestone yesterday.

Thankfully, beachgoers were able to flag down a passing coastguard vehicle.

Eyewitness Heather Dunmall said: "As luck would have it a coastguard vehicle came along the water front.
"We flagged it down and as well as the coastguards on board there was also a lady who was trained in wildlife rescue.

"She was amazing, she had all the kit and managed to extricate the tiny pup."

As well as being underweight and carrying a few grazes from its ordeal, the seal was too young to be put back into the sea.

A coastguard spokesman said: "Once freed from the rocks the seal pup sat by us and was then taken by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) down to RSPCA - Mallydams Wood to be checked over and recuperate.

"It was extremely lucky that it was found when it was.

"Anyone who sees a marine mammal in distress, be it seal, whale, dolphin or anything else, should call BDMLR on 01825 765546, or the RSPCA."
