Mystery postcard seeks family

Postmen are not often faced with letters addressed to an entire street, but a postcard from Sweden gave one such postie an awkward challenge.

The card was sent from a Swedish woman who once stayed in Folkestone many years ago.

Addressed to Ashley Avenue, in Cheriton, the card was trying to track down the Boyes family. With no house number, and nobody knowing the name, the card found its way – totally legally – into the hands of local historian Eamonn Rooney.

Eamonn, who is well known for working at the Leas Lift in the summer, as well as leading walking tours during the literary festival, took up the challenge.

He said: “I looked at the local directories and found a Boyes family living at 45 Ashley Avenue in 1974, which was the last year the directories were produced.

“Afetr that there was no way of knowing what happened to the family.”

The image on the postcard is that of a young girl and a woman, with characteristic 1960s clothing. Unfortunately the quality was not good enough to reproduce here.

Written by a Mona-Lis Holmudd, the card is appealing for the family, who she obviously stayed with in the past, to get in touch.

Anyone who knows how to contact the family should give Eamonn a call and he will put you in touch. His number is 07855 534445.
