Firefighters tackle blaze in flats

Six fire engines attended a fire in Tontine Street, Folkestone, during the early hours of Monday morning.

The alarm was raised at 5.18am with initial reports suggesting there might have been people trapped inside the building - but firefighters soon established that all people were accounted for.

The fire happened in a flat above a Chinese takeaway. The flat on the first floor was 50 per cent damaged by fire and the flat on the second floor was 80 per cent damaged.

Windows had been blown out and walls were blackened.

Firefighters from Folkestone, Hythe, Dover and Ashford tackled the blaze, with three appliances still at the scene four hours later.

The road was closed between the Old High Street and Mill Bay.
