The alarm was raised at around 5pm today (October 21) and teams from Folkestone and Langdon Battery headed to the coastline at Sunny Sands on flashing blue lights.

A road in town has also been cordoned off but it is not known if the two are connected.

A spokesman for the coastguard team said: “The RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat has been sent and Kent Police have been alerted.”

A witness said: “Guildhall Street is cordoned off by police. Also, I saw two loads of coastguard cars go down on blue lights towards Sunny Sands and The Stade on the harbour.”

Other emergency services – including the police, ambulance and fire service – have been contacted for more information.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was not called to the incident.
