It remained sealed off until about 8.45pm, while the man was treated at the scene, near the town's recreation ground.

A police spokesman said: "Officers and paramedics attended the scene where a man was treated for a head injury.

"The road was closed while arrangements were made to recover the vehicles and reopened at about 8.45pm."

The ambulance service confirmed a man was assessed at the scene and treated before being taken to William Harvey Hospital.

It comes as drivers are being urged to stay at home today as roads are expected to be coated in black ice caused by the "big refreeze".

The Met Office issued a yellow level warning for ice covering much of the South East until 11am after recording the coldest night of the year at -15.7C in Braemer, Scotland.
