Monopoly edition for Faversham nears design completion for latest Kent town to feature

The line up for a town's very own version of Monopoly is set to pass go as its design nears completion.

The businesses and landmarks set to appear on the board are almost all confirmed as brewery Shepherd Neame became the latest to join the game's Faversham edition.

Other sites added to the board include Faversham Pools, the railway station, the markets and the National Shrine of St Jude Church.

A competition is being run where residents can nominate their street to be included in game alongside some of the more well-known roads in the town.

Designers behind the game have been asking for businesses to sponsor a space to get their place confirmed with proceeds going towards the town's own Community Chest of good causes.

In a picture released this week, bosses behind the design revealed they include Harley Bear's Coco Bites dog treats supplier, Barley Mow and The Hobby Shop.

It also shows there are some gaps for the final street names to be added.

The firms will then have their own branded property square and property card - replacing the traditional London locations.

The team behind the game, led by Liz Jeffrey, were at the town's market day on Saturday where the board was on show and streets could be nominated.

A postbox for suggestions is also available at the Role Play Rascals in Stone Street.

The medieval market town's version was confirmed last May and needed to raise £70,000 to make the dream a reality to follow in the footsteps of Kent towns to have their landmarks, streets and businesses immortalised on the popular board.

It is not the first time a place in Kent has been granted the honour of featuring in its very own edition of the iconic trading game.

Canterbury was the first in 2014, with Margate following in 2019 and Folkestone a year later.

Maidstone's version hit the shops in October 2021.

However the launch of the game for the cathedral city in 2014 was not without incident, with a picture of Rochester Castle accidentally included on Canterbury’s edition.

The Faversham version is also being created with involvement of the local community in deciding what’s on the board through competitions, events and the chance to nominate roads to feature.

Proceeds from every game sold will go directly to local charities and community groups.

Shepherd Neame chief executive Jonathan Neame, said: “We are delighted to be among the famous Faversham landmarks and businesses to be included in the Faversham Monopoly project, which will be benefitting the local community.

“As Britain’s oldest brewer, Shepherd Neame has been on its site in Faversham for centuries, with our brewers producing award-winning beers for generations of people to enjoy.

"We are pleased to be teaming up with another well-known name – Monopoly – to put Faversham’s stamp on a well-loved board game. Let the games begin.”

The board design will be finalised in the next few weeks, before being sent to Hasbro for manufacture, and the game should be available to buy in the autumn.
