Hess to run rule over new striker

Andy Hessenthaler will be running the rule over striker Nathan Bailey when Dover Athletic open their pre-season campaign at Faversham (3pm) on Saturday,

The 22-year-old former Reading apprentice was released by Welsh League champions Llanelli at the end of last season and has attended Whites' initial training sessions.

Hess said: "Llanelli are managed by (former Wales international) Peter Nicholas, who I used to play with at Watford, and Peter suggested that I should have a look at Nathan.

"He's got lots of pace and may be what we are looking for, but I need to see him in a game before making any decision."

Whites' boss added: "After winning promotion I am looking forward to another challenge and to working with the new players we have signed. We have had four training sessions so far, including a double session last Saturday, and I think the new boys have enjoyed what we are doing and seeing how Darren (Hare) and I go about things.

"We will have a training session on Saturday morning before the game with Faversham in the afternoon. Everybody will get at least 45 minutes (on the pitch), including Alan Pouton who is coming back this week."

Hess is hoping that the experienced midfielder, who has spent the past few weeks back home in the north east, will sign a new contract on his return and, if Bailey also fits the bill, then Hessenthaler could virtually have his squad sewn up before Tuesday's home friendly with Folkestone (7.45pm).
