Jake Goodman is hoping he can chip in with a few more goals for Dover before the end of the season.

The centre-back scored in Whites’ 3-1 home defeat to Torquay last time out.

It was Goodman’s second goal this season, his other effort coming in a 3-2 loss at Woking just after Christmas, and he revealed: “I like to chip in with at least five, that’s normally a target of mine.

“There’s been chances I should have scored (from) but, when the next chance does come, I have to make sure I take it.”

Goodman is looking forward to getting back in action after an unusual week.

Their scheduled home fixture against Notts County last Tuesday was called off, much to the frustration of chairman Jim Parmenter, before their weekend trip to FC Halifax was also postponed due to a waterlogged pitch on Friday.

“It’s been a bit tough,” admitted Goodman, who still headed to the Leeds area over the weekend to visit his partner’s family.

“I’m a player that likes to play as much as possible. I don’t like postponements because it messes up my routine.”

Dover visit Aldershot tonight before welcoming Grimsby, who sit just outside the play-off places, to Crabble this Saturday. Full-back Myles Judd remains suspended for both games following his sending-off at Stockport.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler has managed to bolster his attacking options, though, bringing in ex-West Ham forward Djair Parfitt-Williams.

Parfitt-Williams trained with the club last week ahead of signing on a non-contract basis, having played for the Hammers’ first-team in both legs of their Europa League qualifiers over Andorran side Lusitanos in 2015.

Goodman liked what he saw from the Bermudan-born player and said: “To be fair, we trained with him last week.

“Hopefully he can hit the ground running. He gives us another option up front.

“Alfie needs support up there, although Michael (Gyasi) offers that now as well. It helps us going forward.”

It’s been a tough campaign for the National League basement boys who have won only once.

“There’s been a couple of games where we have been off it and the scoreline shows that,” he reflected. “But that’s always going to happen against the real top teams, either coming down from League 2 or looking to go in there.

“There seems to be a lot more money in it (the National League) this year. There’s not that many part-time teams now.

“You can see the difference.

“Being part-time is a factor but it’s the cards we have been dealt with. Sometimes, it’s down to us as the players to do more as well.”

Goodman also offered his support to manager Andy Hessenthaler, stating: “Look, you can see all the players are running for the management and the staff.

“All right, yes, it’s been a difficult year on the whole, but we all need to fight for something next year. We have a lot of young players who want to go into the Football League.

“No-one has seen anyone down tools and give up when we have lost, and we can still play a part in other teams’ seasons as well.”

Goodman has been delighted to see the recent progress made by Academy midfielder George Wilkinson, while promising young frontman Noah Carney has also heavily featured for the first-team this season.

“It’s a good sign for the Academy,” the defender commented.

“It shows, if players are playing well, then they will get their chance.”
