Browne's tough first assignment

ALL SMILES: But will Steve Browne still be happy after his first competitive match in charge?

NEW Dover Athletic boss Steve Browne's first competitive match in charge is a difficult trip to joint league leaders Yeading on Saturday.

Whites' starting line-up seems certain to be radically different from that which lost 5-2 at Chelmsford on Oct 11.

Matt Carruthers is still ruled out by injury but Browne is confident that Craig Cloke, who went off in the second half during Tuesday's friendly match against Bishops Stortford with a dead leg will have recovered in time.

Meanwhile, the recent influx of new blood has not been welcomed by all the existing squad members, a few of whom allegedly let their feelings be known in strident terms in the Centre Spot bar after Saturday's reserve game.

Club chairman Mick Kemp said: "I heard and read on the club website about alleged comments made in the Centre Spot on Saturday. They will be investigated within the club, but no action has yet been taken against any player."

Mr Kemp did reveal that midfielder Billy Bone had been "temporarily withdrawn" from his position as Youth Development Officer.

The chairman added: "We want Billy to concentrate on getting himself fit to play football for us, and when he's done that he will return to his YDO role."

Browne, meanwhile, denied rumours that goalkeeper Paul Hyde, who applied for the manager's job, had been banned from the club for a week.

Browne said: "Paul has not been banned, but I said to him last Saturday 'go and have a week off and think about what you want to do'. I hope that when he comes back it will be with a positive response, but only Paul knows the answer to that."
