MP Charlie Elphicke has asked the Immigration Minister to reject Ukip's plans to bring Britain's borders back from Calais to Dover.

The Tory made his case in the House of Commons on Monday, also pressing the minister James Brokenshire to confirm that £12 million funding for border controls would be spent on bolstering security.

He labelled Ukip's border idea as "barmy" and said moving the borders back to Dover would be a "disaster."

Mr Elphicke said: “We are making our borders safer and more secure. We must keep our border controls at Calais. Ukip’s barmy idea to move border controls back to Dover would be a total disaster – we all remember how bad things were in Dover before the controls were set up at Calais a decade ago.”

He added: "Border security is a crucial issue in the Dover district.

“I welcome the minister confirming that the £12 million funding is going towards border security, not a migrant welcome centre. A welcome centre would only act as a magnet for more migrants to come to Calais."
