Crane tears down multi-storey car park behind Burlington House in Dover

A crane tearing down the multi-storey car park behind Burlington House was a sight welcomed by many on Wednesday.

The derelict shell in St James Street, Dover, is the first to come down, with Burlington House and County Hotel next on the list.

Dover District Council acquired full ownership of the premises earlier this month, which prompted the preparation works to begin shortly after.

A compound has been established in Russell Street and the demolition material will be processed, screened and crushed in a controlled manner on the former Stagecoach site.

The aim is to recycle 95% of the materials.

The contractors will also start the process of screening Burlington House in a scaffolding wrap.

The building will be made safe and stripped out internally prior to the removal of asbestos.

Physical demolition of the eyesore is expected to start this autumn.

Dover District Council uploaded the following video with a tweet. It said: "Witness the start of demolition of Burtlington House complex - just in case there was any doubt!"
