Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood has paid a visit to Kent - in order to surprise his wife Sally after she completed a relay swim across the Channel.

The rock icon today told fans on Instagram he is "so proud" of Sally after greeting her in Dover last week.

The 75-year-old met her on the Kent coast in the early hours of Thursday, when her team got back from France.

Sally, 44, and her friend Anne Heath took on the gruelling 22-mile challenge in order to raise money for Aspire, a charity helping people with spinal injuries.

Posting on Instagram this afternoon, Mr Wood said: "I’m so proud of @sallywood1’s relay swim across the Channel ~ England to France.

"Huge congratulations to everyone who took part in the swim for @aspirecharity WOW!

"I left London after midnight to surprise her in Dover when the team got back from France.

"Well done Sally! I am so proud of you."

The world-famous guitarist even tested how cold the sea was himself.

He shared a video message which he had sent to Sally as he walked along the seafront in Dover, in which he says: "How the hell did you get in that water? It's not warm, I tell you."

Actress and producer Sally also shared the video, saying: "Love that @ronniewood came to Dover in the middle of the night to surprise us from the boat!"

The couple, set to celebrate 10 years of marriage in December, are both urging people to donate money to Aspire via a JustGiving page.

So far, Sally and her team have raised £23,000 of a £50,000 target.

Writing on the fundraising page, she says: "Life-changing injuries can happen to anyone at any time and we want to support this great cause to ensure they can support as many people in need as possible."

Among those praising Sally for her efforts is Margate-based artist Tracey Emin, who replied on Mr Wood's post saying: "That's amazing."
