Mugger robs woman in her 80s of her handbag in Townwall Street, Dover

A mugger pulled an elderly woman to the ground and snatched her handbag.

The street robbery happened at about 4am this morning in Townwall Street in Dover, close to the junction with Woolcomber Street.

The victim, who is in her 80s, was standing by a bus stop when a man grabbed her shoulder, pulled her to the ground and took her handbag.

The black shoulder bag had a quantity of cash and a mobile phone.

Det Insp Keith Taylor said: "Fortunately the victim was not badly injured, but she was understandably shaken by what happened.

"Townwall Street is one of the main routes into Dover and there are likely to have been people driving along the road even at that time of the morning.

"We are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the robbery or saw anyone acting suspiciously to contact us."

Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently in police custody.

A 15-year-old boy from the Dover area was arrested on suspicion of robbery.

A 30-year-old man from the Dover area was arrested on suspicion of the theft of a motor vehicle.
