Dover Western Heights open weekend welcomed more than 1,000 visitors over the two days.

The weather dampened spirits on Saturday but the mood was brightened up again on Sunday when more than 700 people came for a day’s entertainment.

Phil Eyden, member of the Dover Western Heights Preservation Society said: “We were amazed as to how far some came to put on displays.

“We had soldiers from Napoleonic, Victorian, First World War, and Second World War eras and a Kent Steampunk fantasy group graced us on Saturday. I’d estimate that by Sunday there must have been at least forty people in uniform at the fort and a couple of Jeeps.”

The event also saw a genuine Napoleonic cannon fired from the fort throughout both days.

There was also a series of re-enactments and one which saw the French being vanquished and expelled from Dover.

Mr Eyden added: “Our volunteers had baked dozens of cakes and the whole lot sold out completely by early Sunday afternoon which we really didn’t expect.”
