A former ferry worker who tried to smuggle 90 kilos of heroin and 10 kilos of cocaine in three cases worth £4.5 million into the UK through the Port of Dover was jailed for eight years on Tuesday.

Stephen McNamee, who worked for Norfolk Line, was intercepted by UK Border Agency detection officers as he drove at speed towards the crew dock exit gate wearing a high visibility vest on September 1.

A search of his vehicle was carried out and three cases were located within the car. Two were in the boot space and one was in the rear passenger footwell.

Officers opened the cases and found taped packages of a brown powdered substance which when tested reacted positively to heroin. Revenue and Customs officers then took over the investigation.

McNamee, 31, from Anglesey, pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court to being knowingly concerned in the importation of heroin and cocaine.
