A cross-Channel ferry narrowly avoided a collision with the luxury cruise liner the QE2 in the Dover Strait, an investigation has found. P&O Ferries’ Pride of Kent had to act when the world-famous cruise liner failed to give way off Dover and sailed into the passenger ferry’s path.

A report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch said the incident occurred at 10pm on December 15 when the QE2 was sailing through the Channel from Zeebrugge to Southampton.

Conditions were said to be light winds with good visibility when the Pride of Kent left Dover for Calais.

The report said the QE2 was required to give way, but it was clear that there was going to be a “close quarters situation”.

The findings read: “When it became apparent that no avoiding action was being taken by QE2, Pride of Kent reduced her speed allowing it to pass 0.6 mile ahead. There were no injuries to personnel and no pollution.”

Following the incident, the Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has considered the actions taken by both the companies and is said to be satisfied with the steps they have taken to prevent future accidents.

Cunard Line, which operates the QE2 will send a letter to the fleet describing the incident, and identifying lessons learned.

P&O Ferries will carry out an internal investigation, including a review of bridge procedures throughout the fleet.
