Driver hits five parked cars in Dover's Buckland Avenue

It has been a less than happy start to the New Year for residents of one Dover street.

The driver of a vehicle travelling along Buckland Avenue at around 10pm last night, New Year's Eve, lost control of his vehicle and plunged into a parked car, forcing it partially onto the pavement, and damaging four other parked vehicles in the shunt.

Buckland Avenue resident Karol Steele said: "We were watching telly when suddenly there was a tremendous bang and a very loud metal grinding noise.

"When we went outside we found the car had lost its left front wheel in the crash, causing it to spin 180 degrees, and leaving a long metal gouge mark on the road.

"Debris was sent flying everywhere."

The driver, a young man in his 20s, and his female passenger, remained at the scene where they were treated by ambulance crews, but are not thought to have suffered any serious injuries.

The one-way street is 30mph, but is a through route to the docks.

Mrs Steele said: "I think it was lucky we were in Covid lockdown. There are several pubs in the area as well as a chippie and takeway.

"Normally it's very likely someone would have been walking along the pavement and then I don't like to think what might have happened."

A recovery vehicle later removed the crashed car and two of the stationary vehicles.

Police interviewed the driver at the scene, but it is not yet known whether any charges will follow.

Meanwhile, Mrs Steele and her neighbours have been outside today sweeping up the mess.
