DETECTIVES investigating a robbery at a bank in Dover are appealing to people for help in identifying the offender.

The alarm was raised just after 10am on Monday when a man, said to smell strongly of drink, went into the Lloyds TSB Bank in the Market Square and handed a note to the cashier.

The note indicated he was carrying a gun and he demanded money, but no weapon was actually seen. What has been described as a “small amount of cash” was handed over. It is not known whether the robber escaped on foot or in a car.

CCTV footage is being examined as part of the enquiry. The raider is described as a short, stocky man aged in his late 40s to early 50s with balding hair. He was wearing a grey jumper and dark trousers. He spoke with a Scottish accent.

Police spokesman Jon Green said: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen this man either before or after the robbery. Witnesses said he smelt strongly of drink, so it may have been that someone saw him drinking or knows where he was drinking."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Crime Unit on Dover (01304) 240055, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
