Young football star makes history

RISING STAR: 17-year-old Sammy Moore

SAMMY MOORE is poised to mark the end of his first season as a professional with Ipswich Town by picking up an FA Youth Cup winners’ medal.

Sammy, from Deal, was in the Ipswich side who drew 2-2 with Southampton in the first leg of the final at St Mary’s Road on Monday, a result which puts Town in pole position for the second leg at Portman Road on Friday.

And whatever the result of the match, which is being televised live on Sky, 17-year-old Sammy has already made a little piece of football history by winning a Youth Cup final medal.

His older brother Jason played for the West Ham side who lost to Liverpool in the 1996 final, and FA statisticians have confirmed that only three sets of brothers have ever won Youth Cup final medals, the others being Gary and Phil Neville of Manchester United, and Luke and Stefan Moore of Aston Villa.

But the difference with Sammy and Jason’s achievement is that they have won them in different years with different clubs, and their father, Henry, from Vlissingen Drive, said: "We are really proud because it’s a great achievement."

The Ipswich side swept past Spurs 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals before earning a draw in front of nearly 10,000 spectators in the final first-leg at Southampton.

Henry added: "Sammy played really well. He started at right midfield and then dropped back in the second half after the right-back got injured. The result on Monday has now set things up nicely for the second leg, and Ipswich are expecting a big crowd."

Sammy has just completed the first year of his three-year scholarship at the Ipswich Youth Academy and has also turned out for the Town reserve team.
