TWO young cyclists have had their potential recognised by the British Cycling Federation.

James Coop, 15, from Felderland Lane, Worth, near Deal, and Tom Smart, 14, from Peak Drive, Eastry, have been selected for the federation’s 2004 national youth development squad.

The youngsters, who train together, are members of VC Deal Cycling Club and have been awarded two of the 20 squad selections from the south of England.

James was also picked for the squad last year. He plans to take part in some national races this year, including the Tour of Wales in July.

He said: “I would like to thank my coaches, Malcolm Whitehead and Dr Damian Coleman, for all their help and also my sponsors, Downland Cycles of Canterbury.”

Tom is also a talented cyclo-cross rider and finished second in the national under-15 championship last year.

His father, Tony, said: “Tom is grateful for the support he has received from his school, Sandwich Technology School, and also from Malcolm Whitehead of VC Deal.
