Moxon secures golfing hat-trick

FORMER club captain Howard Moxon won the Borough of Deal Challenge Cup for the third time to climax Deal Week at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club.

Playing off a handicap of two, Moxon defeated Paul Chidley one up in the final. Moxon was never ahead in the final but won the 17th to square the match and then took the 18th to claim the trophy.

In the other semi-final, Chidley overcame Simon Shepherd two up. Forty-eight players entered the competition which was first held in 1893.

In the Sir Robert Menzies Challenge Salver, Peter Nicholson fought off strong opposition throughout the three days, beating Paul Craven at the 19th in the final.

The Invicta Cup attracted an entry of 104 competitors, with the top 50 and ties qualifying for the second round. Winner was Mike Robinson who recorded a two-round total of 139 (73 + 66) to win on countback from Tony Brewer.

The ladies’ section Gordon Vase competition was won by Susan Gibb, from Walmer, who defeated Sue Hedges in the final.

* Walmer & Kingsdown GC have fought their way through to the final of the East Kent League Cup competition, in which they will meet Canterbury.
