Wife's tribute to 'perfect husband' Glyn Moon from Deal who used private pension to fund cancer treatment

The wife of a man who spent more than £50,000 on 'last resort' cancer treatment says it was worth every penny because it gave him hope.

Susan Moon has paid tribute to her "perfect husband" Glyn who died at their Deal home in Arthur Road on Friday, aged 64.

The grandfather-of-three had endured a four-year battle with oesophageal cancer, having first been diagnosed in April 2016.

Since February, he had been receiving immunotherapy treatment Pembrolizumab - a new treatment unavailable on the NHS - after initially being told nothing more could be done.

Following the launch of a fundraising campaign reported by KentOnline in February and using his private pension, he was able to fund the first four sessions. The couple were also prepared to release equity on their home to help buy more time.

Mr Moon was "made up" to have been told only a few weeks ago that the tumours had disappeared in places and shrunk in others.

With this news in mind it is not known what caused his death and his family are awaiting the results of a post mortem.

Mrs Moon, 62, said: "He only had four treatments but with consultant fees, nursing fees, scans, we spent over £51,000.

"But it was worth every penny as it gave him hope.

"People had been so supportive and kind and I'd like to say thank you to everybody who donated."

The GoFundMe campaign raised more than £3,000 and a further £3,000 was collected via donations at Walmer's Bandstand Bakery, where Mr Moon worked.

He was one of six children born and raised by his parents in Deal. He went to St Mary's Primary and then Walmer Secondary School before working for P&O Ferries for 18 years.

He then managed Superdrug stores in Deal, Dover, Faversham and Folkestone for 17 years.

He met his wife in 1973 at Deal Welfare Club and they married two years later. They went on to have two daughters Melanie and Lisa, but sadly Lisa died in a tragic accident when she was 16 years old.

Mr Moon has been described as a "real people person" who loved chatting about politics and football.

He was a Manchester United fan and proud to have taught his grandson to play snooker, a game he loved.

Mrs Moon said: "Glyn was the best husband, so caring and loving. He always put his family first and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

"We'll miss him so much."

Due to the pandemic, Mr Moon will only be allowed a graveside funeral with a maximum number of 10 people in attendance.

Having collected prizes for a fundraising event, his family will hold a raffle in his memory, with funds raised going towards the Cancer Care Club at Kent and Canterbury Hospital.
